Meghan Markle and Prince Harry: Which famous friends have defended the Sussex couple?
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry came under fire after it emerged they took four private jets over 11 days this month as they went on holiday in Nice and Ibiza. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex opted to use private planes which aggravated many people after the couple have repeatedly preached about the environment. In the financial year to March 31, the Royal Family spent a total of £4.6 million on travel, £369,778 which was spent on 43 charter flight journeys.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced heavy criticism for using private jets while simultaneously urging fans to consider their impact on climate change.
The couple has been very vocal about their stance on climate change, with the cover of Meghan’s Vogue issue featuring Greta Thunberg, a teen girl who has become the poster girl of European climate change activism.
Prince Harry in turn told Vogue he and Meghan would only be having two children on account of the “terrifying” implications of climate change.
Later, at a “green summit” in Sicily, organised by Google, he delivered a speech without shoes or socks in a bid to “raise awareness.”
However, now the couple have faced accusations of hypocrisy after they took their fourth flight in 11 days by private jet when they visited Elton John’s home in Nice.
Elton John, who performed at the couple’s royal wedding reception, immediately jumped to the couple’s defence.
He revealed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had stayed at his home in Nice and that he provided the plane, which was carbon neutral, which typically involves calculating how much your flight generates in greenhouse gas emissions and financially contributing to a project that aims to reduce emissions by that same amount.
He tweeted: “I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week.
“Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.
“After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home.
“To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight.
“To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™.
“I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis. Elton.”
Meanwhile, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres also defended the couple.
She tweeted: “Portia and I met Prince Harry and Meghan in England to talk about their work on wildlife conservation.
“They were the most down-to-earth, compassionate people.
“Imagine being attacked for everything you do, when all you’re trying to do is make the world better.”
Singer Pink was another defender of the Sussex couple, taking to social media to urge fans everywhere to stop “bullying” them.
She wrote: “I’m happy to see people coming to the defense of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
“The way people treat her is the most public form of bullying I have seen in a while.
“It’s out of control. Let’s all be a bit kinder, huh? Let’s show our children that it’s cool to be kind.”
Polo star Nacho Figueras also spoke out to defend Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following the couple’s recent backlash.
Mr Figueras made his remarks in a comment on Elton John’s Instagram after the singer defended the royal couple amid public uproar.
He wrote: “I also have the privilege of spending time with this 2 great human beings.
“I say privilege not only because of their status but because of the kind of people they are.
“They are the most humble and kind people that I know. And who they are should allow them to be even more inspiring to all of us.
“Instead the press focuses on attacking them and trying to find problems where there are not.
“I will defend them and what they do and who they are for as long as I live.
“They are a treasure in today’s society and we should be taking care of them and feeling inspired by them. I know I do.
“H & M, We have your back, please be patient and do not change a thing.”
