Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to ‘make announcement’ following last royal event
Meghan and Prince Harry are attending their last engagement as senior royals today, three weeks before officially stepping down as full-time members of the Royal Family. While they are expected to return to Canada after having attended the Commonwealth Day ceremony at Westminster Abbey, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex won’t entirely disappear from the public eye, according to a royal correspondent.
Rebecca English, the royal correspondent of the Daily Mail, claimed the couple will issue some statements in the near future.
She wrote on Twitter: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will carry out their last engagement today as senior working royals, appearing with the Royal Family at the Commonwealth Service.
“I’m told they will make some announcements over the next few weeks, but they have no duties in their diaries.”
One of the statements expected to be issued by Meghan and Harry is related to their new brand name.
The couple were told they need to drop the word ‘royal’ from their current brand name, Sussex Royal, to make sure they won’t be profiting from their connection with the monarchy.
In February, the couple issued a statement where they acknowledge the palace’s request to change their established name, saying: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”
Meghan and Harry are also likely to provide new details about their foundation.
In July last year, the couple formally established their new charitable organisation, called The Sussex Royal Foundation.
Within weeks, they appointed directors and trustees, completing their separation from Kate and Prince William’s Royal Foundation.
However, in their latest statement, they announced they had withdrawn their Sussex Royal trademark applications and that they don’t want to start a foundation but, rather, to “develop a new way to effect change and complement the efforts made by so many excellent foundations globally.”
They added: “The creation of this non-profit entity will be in addition to their cause driven work that they remain deeply committed to.
“While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organisation, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal’, it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation will not utilise the name ‘Sussex Royal’ or any other iteration of ‘Royal.’
“For the above reason, the trademark applications that had been filed as protective measures and that reflected the same standard trademarking requests as done for The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have been removed.”
Today Meghan and Harry are publicly meeting for the first time in months Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
The Sussexes haven’t been seen with these senior royals in public since mid-November, when they all attended the solemn ceremony at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
Meghan and Harry, on the other hand, were spotted joining the Queen at the Windsor’s All Saint Chapel yesterday for Sunday service.
Last Sunday, the monarch also held a private meeting with his grandson during which, according to a royal source, they “hopefully had the chance to clear the air”.
