Meghan Markle and Prince Harry released a video ahead of the US 2020 Presidential Election in which the pair effectively endorsed Joe Biden. In the video, Prince Harry said it was “time to not only reflect but act,” which was thought to be a swipe at Donald Trump. The Duke of Sussex is also known to have build up a close relationship with First Lady Jill Biden as they collaborated on a couple of occasions over the years.

NBC royal correspondent Neil Sean reported sources close to the royal couple had suggested the couple had been hoping to forge a stronger relationship with the presidential couple after they entered the White House.

Mr Sean said: “They put their eggs in one basket to try and make sure that President Biden won his Presidency.

“You would have thought that would have meant a trip to the White House, which, according to a source is what the Sussex’s had hoped.

“Sadly for them, it appears that the draw of the British monarchy is far bigger.

“We can look forward to President Biden coming to the United Kingdom not just to meet Her Majesty the Queen, but HRH Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.”

He added: “According to a very good source in California, this hasn’t gone down particularly well.

“We all know Ms Markle is very keen to get her designer heels down at that famous desk at the White House.

“If not now, certainly sometime in the near future.”

Since the couple’s departure from the Royal Family in 2020, several commentators have suggested the Duchess of Sussex may seek to run for political office in the future.

Mr Sean added: “For Harry and Meghan this is another blow, and perhaps a dose of reality to realise that not everything they hoped for will come true.”

When Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior royals, it was widely speculated that Meghan’s political ambitions had a part to play in the decision.

The British monarchy is famously apolitical which would have hindered Meghan’s ability to speak publicly about such issues.

Buckingham Palace tried to distance the Royal Family from the remarks made by Meghan and Harry during the US election by issuing a statement saying that “the Duke is not a working member of the Royal Family”.

They also pointed out that the comments were “made in a personal capacity”.

Recently the duo have been vocal about their beliefs on COVID 19 vaccine equity. The duo participated in Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour event broadcast live from Central Park.

They also visited the United Nations to meet with the US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to discuss racial justice, mental health awareness, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
