Harry and Meghan were married three years ago at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel. To mark the occasion PETA, an American animal welfare charity, sent the couple two pairs of vegan leather trainers.

Leather is often given as a gift on third wedding anniversaries to mark the bond between couples.

PETA put their own spin on this with the vegan presents, which usually retail for around £75 per pair.

Based on the famous Adidas Stan Smith design they are made from recycled fabrics and don’t contain any virgin polyester.

PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk wrote a note to the couple which was shared with Euronews Green.

It said: “We know how much you care about animals and the environment.

“Unlike the leather industry, which kills over one billion animals every year and whose end product is ranked the most polluting material in fashion.

“We, therefore, sought to mark your special day in a modern, eco-conscious, and animal-friendly way.

“We hope you love the gift and that the shoes will inspire you to continue to embrace vegan fashion.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding three years ago was watched live by hundreds of millions around the world.

As her father was unable to attend following medical complications Meghan was walked down the aisle by Prince Charles.

She wore a Givenchy bridal gown featuring flowers from different countries in the Commonwealth.

The couple have a son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, who was born in 2019.

In January 2020 Harry and Meghan caused a global sensation by announcing their intention to step down as senior Royal Family members.

Instead the couple said they would become “financially independent” and split their time between North America and Britain.

They moved to California, the Duchesses’ home state, shortly before it went into coronavirus lockdown.

In July 2020 Meghan tragically suffered a miscarriage, which she later wrote about movingly for the New York Times.

In March Harry and Meghan made incendiary accusations against other Royal Family members during an Oprah Winfrey interview for CBS.

The Duchess claimed there were “concerns and conversations” within the family about Archie’s skin tone prior to his birth.

However both she and Harry declined to name the royal they held responsible.

Meghan also talked about her mental health struggles and revealed she’d suffered from loneliness since marrying into the Royal Family.

Buckingham Palace released a statement on behalf of the Queen noting “some recollections may differ” about the events described.
