Meghan Markle and Prince Harry receive support from US celebrity friends after royal split

Oprah and her best friend, another TV star, Gayle King, were stopped by celebrity news website TMZ, who asked the pair their opinion on the issue. Oprah said: “I support them 1,000 percent. You know why I support them? I support them because I believe, when you have thought about this as long as they have – and even in the Queen’s statement [she] says, ‘This has been going on for months’, these discussions have been going on for months… And when Harry said in that charity statement the other day [that] he had to make the decision to move forward in peace with his new family, who doesn’t feel what that takes to make that decision to give up everything you’ve known your whole life to say, I’m going to choose this new life or what I believe to be the truest vision for myself?”

Oprah and Gayle King were both in attendance at the Duchess of Sussex’s baby shower in New York last year, which was organised by her friends ahead of the arrival of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Oprah added: “He did what he needed to do for his family. I don’t think anybody has any right to say anything.”

Gayle King heartily agreed with her friend, stating her opinion that it was “unfair” to say the Queen was “blindsided” by the decision of the Sussexes.

She said: “Even the Queen’s own statement said these conversations have been going on for months.”

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have both been vocal supporters and friends of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex over the past few years.

Gayle King worked on a news special for American news channel CBS entitled “Meghan and Harry Plus One”.

The mini-documentary interviewed a series of friends and royal experts on Harry and Meghan’s relationship, and the arrival of baby Archie.

Oprah attended the couple’s royal wedding in May 2018.

She has also worked alongside Prince Harry and Apple in producing a series of documentaries on mental health and wellbeing.

The decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to step back from their roles as senior royals followed months of discussions, which culminated in the so-called Sandringham Summit.

The Queen released a statement following the talks which said: “Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family…

“It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

Buckingham Palace also released a statement on behalf of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The couple thanked the Queen and the Royal Family for their support in the new phase of their lives.

Going forward, Harry and Meghan will not use their HRH titles, but will still possess them.

They also expressed their desire to repay the Sovereign Grant for expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which they will keep as their UK family home.

It is the intention of Harry and Meghan to split their time between Canada and the UK.

Archie, their son, will be raised in both countries, which as the couple said, will allow them to “raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter.”

Prince Harry recently stated that the decision to “step my family back” was “not one I made lightly”.

He was reunited with Meghan and Archie earlier this week when he touched down in Vancouver.
