Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have “no chance” to secure a spot on Buckingham Palace’s balcony as the King will use the moment to highlight core family members. A source close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex claimed over the weekend that the pair had asked to be allowed on the balcony on the day of the Coronation before even confirming they will attend. But expert Angela Mollard argued the King will likely deny their request as part of his efforts to keep the focus on an increasingly smaller portion of the family.

Mollard said: “The latest thing they’ve said is they want to be on the balcony for the Coronation while not giving a confirmation themselves that they’re going to be there.

“This is five weeks out, they need some planning around this, they need to know whether to set aside the chairs.

“There is no chance they’re going to be on the balcony – the Queen wanted a slimmed-down monarchy. Charles is further enforcing that.

“He has dealt beautifully with Andrew and they need to turn around and say there’s no chance they’ll get a place on that balcony.”

Following the departure of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in March 2020, and Prince Andrew’s forced retirement from duties, the late Queen relied on a smaller group of relatives to help conduct her duties.

And the King now appears set on following in her footsteps, with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne and the newly-minted Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh taking on a leading role to support him and the Queen Consort.

But despite the ongoing feud between the Sussexes and the wider Royal Family, His Majesty has remained committed to bridging the gap with his youngest son.

Former ITN reporter Tim Ewart said there is “still a lot to negotiate” with Harry and Meghan to secure their attendance at the Coronation but the King is keen to have them there.

Speaking to Sky Australia’s The Royal Report, Ewart said: “Charles clearly wants his son at the Coronation. He and Meghan have been invited.

“Their children, at the moment, have not. Should they have a role, or should they be recognised? So there’s still a lot to negotiate.

“My sense is that the Palace have extended the invitation and they’re now just able to say ‘look, guys, the ball is in your court – if you don’t want to come let us know, if you do want to come, you’re going to have to play by our rules’.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed earlier this month they had received an invite for the Coronation.

But a spokesperson for the couple said they would not confirm yet whether they would attend.

A royal insider told OK! magazine the ongoing negotiations over the balcony appearance could ultimately result in Harry and Meghan deciding not to attend the service.

They said: “The Palace are trying to wrap up negotiations as quickly as possible because they can’t go right up to the wire. It could lead to chaos.

“It could very well be that it ends in a stalemate, and they won’t attend. But the Palace is doing everything in its power to not let that happen.”
