The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to sit down with the American TV host to discuss their departure from their roles as working members of the Royal Family and reveal their plans for the future. But a royal insider has said no one will benefit from the Sussexes going public with their story and suggested officials at Buckingham Palace were concerned about the move.

The source told The Times: “Time to hide behind the sofa at the palace.

“Oprah is skilled at getting people to talk about their feelings and bound to take them down a path they’ll almost certainly regret.

“There will be an element of reliving Megxit and airing their grievances.

“No one benefits from that, but Oprah will get it out of them whether they like it or not.”

Down through the decades, multiple members of the Royal Family have ended up regretting their interviews with the media.

Princess Diana gave an explosive interview to the BBC’s Panorama programme in 1995 in which she spoke about Prince Charles’ extramarital affair and also admitted adultery on her own part.

She later told friends she “deeply regretted” the interview.

And the Prince of Wales is understood to have harboured similar regrets over his interview with Jonathan Dimbleby in 1994.

In the ITN interview, the heir to the throne admitted for the first time that he had been unfaithful to his wife.

And in 2019 Prince Andrew’s car crash interview with the BBC’s Emily Maitlis spelled his exit from royal duties.

After the programme aired, there was uproar over the prince’s apparent lack of sympathy for the victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, his long-time friend.

The palace announced he would be temporarily stepping back from royal duties.

Harry and Meghan will not be the first members of the Royal Family to sit opposite Oprah.

The duke’s aunt, Sarah Ferguson, has given several interviews to the talk show host.

Oprah’s grilling of the Sussexes will air in a 90-minute programme on March 7 on CBS.

The programme, titled Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A CBS Primetime Special, will shine a spotlight on a number of issues.

According to the network, Meghan will take centre state at the beginning as she chats to Oprah about her transition from actress to royal wife and mother.

The duchess, who is expecting her second child, will also touch on how “she is handling life under intense public pressure”.

Later on, the two ladies will be joined by Harry as the conversation turns to the future.

The couple will discuss their big move across the pond and give fans a glimpse into what they should expect to see from them in the coming months.
