The Duke and Duchess of Sussex quit royal duties last year for a new life in America and have since hit out at the Royal Family in a series of interviews. But royal author Phil Dampier accused the pair of “blaming” the royals to “justify” their Megxit decision.

Mr Dampier, author of Royally Suited: Harry and Meghan in Their Own, also claimed former actress Meghan “never intended” to remain a member of the Royal Family.

The royal expert told the Sun: “I don’t buy this that they didn’t help to protect Meghan and I don’t buy she was driven out by racism.

“I don’t think her heart was really in it.

“When you look at some of the projects she’s got involved with and they were seemingly planning a couple of years ago.

“I personally think she never intended to stay in the Royal Family.

“I’m afraid that blaming members of the Royal Family and courtiers and how they were treated is just an excuse for what they have done and to justify what they’ve done.”

The Sussexes made a set of damaging claims about the royals in their Oprah Winfrey interview, which aired in March.

The controversial tell-all interview plunged the monarchy into a fresh crisis just one year after Megxit.

The couple claimed royal aides declined to help Meghan when she felt suicidal and said a relative had made a racist comment about their son’s skin colour.

Meanwhile, Harry made the extraordinary claim that his father Prince Charles and brother Prince William were “trapped” in their royal roles.

And the Duke has since gone on to lash out at life as a member of the Royal Family.

Speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast last month, Harry described being a royal as “a mixture between The Truman Show and being in a zoo”.

The Duke also appeared to suggest Charles, the Queen and Prince Philip had all failed as parents – in a devastating swipe at the heir to the throne, the monarch and her beloved late husband.

Harry said he wanted to “break the cycle” of “genetic pain and suffering” for the sake of his own children.

He added of Charles: “He’s treated me the way he was treated, so how can I change that for my own kids?”

In his Apple TV documentary series, The Me You Can’t See, Harry accused the royals of “total neglect” and warned he would “never be bullied into silence” in the future.

Megxit saw the Sussexes quit as working royals in March 2020.

The couple have set up home in an £11million mansion in Montecito and have struck lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify as they pursue new lives of personal and financial freedom.
