Meghan Markle and Harry’s relationship with Palace ‘on rocky ground’ after shock claim

The shock claim has emerged out of court filings regarding her lawsuit against Associated Newspapers. The Duchess of Sussex is suing the publisher over a letter she sent to her father that was published in the Mail on Sunday and MailOnline last year that she claims breached her copyright and privacy. However, details emerging out of the court case may be damaging the Sussexes’ relationship with the Palace.
Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior royals at the end of March and the Queen issued a statement, emphasising that she supported them in their decision.
The statement read: “Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.
“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family.
“I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.
“I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across the country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.”
This must have been difficult for Her Majesty, given reports she was “hurt” that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had announced their intention to step down before they had fully agreed the terms, something that was explicitly against her wishes.
This led to the Sandringham Summit, an emergency meeting where the royals gathered to thrash out what Meghan and Harry’s departure would look like.
Despite the Palace and the Sussexes eventually parting on good terms, there is a risk their relationship could enter another rough patch over claims made in Meghan’s court case.
Pod Save the Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.
In an episode earlier this month, a comparison was made between Meghan’s privacy trial and Johnny Depp’s libel trial against The Sun’s publisher News Group Newspapers.
Over the past month, Mr Depp’s court case, which is now awaiting judgement, has uncovered some unsavoury insights into his relationship with his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Mr Myers said: “In terms of Depp, there was an argument to say that, regardless of what happens in this case, his whole private life has been dragged into the open, hasn’t it?

“Whether it’s drug or alcohol abuse or the way he speaks to people or converses with or treats people in his close network and I think that’s the danger of what will happen here.
“Because Meghan might be taking the Mail on Sunday to task, but all this other stuff about how she felt she was dealt with within the Palace walls is going to really make for uncomfortable reading.
“And if she or Harry wants to have a relationship with the Palace, it might be on rocky ground if you’re airing dirty laundry in public, as will happen undoubtedly in this case.”
Ms Gripper added: “When something is a point of principle and you feel very strongly about it and you want to defend your good name or your privacy or whatever it wants to be, it’s like, where is the line and how much do you want to do it?”
When Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior royals, they had to give up a number of roles and titles, including a promise not to use their HRH titles or their Sussex Royal brand.
Harry also had to relinquish a number of military titles, which would have been a huge disappointment for him.
However, the Duke and Duchess stayed on as the President and Vice President of The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, demonstrating that they still had links to the monarchy.
It is also expected that Meghan and Harry will attend certain royal events in the future, when the coronavirus crisis is over and life returns to normal.
However, if their relationship with the Palace becomes even more strained, it is possible the couple may hold back from appearing at these events.
What’s more, Harry has always been close with his brother William, father Charles and grandmother, the Queen, and will likely be devastated if their relationships deteriorate.
