Prince Harry 'will be taking paternity leave' says expert

Anna Pasternak, author of The Real Wallis Simpson: A New History of the American Divorcee Who Became the Duchess of Windsor, believes the Sussex royals were more popular than Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. The Sussex royals stepped back from duties and returned their Royal patronages in March.

Ms Pasternak said Meghan and Harry’s popularity echoed that of the Princess of Wales.

She said: “Harry and Meghan were suddenly too electric.

“They made the Cambridges seem dowdy, suburban, and rather dull.”

Speaking to Vanity Fair for their May cover story, Ms Pasternak said echoes of Diana could be seen in Harry, while William is closer to Prince Charles.

She told the outlet: “William and Harry are playing out the dynamic of their parents.”

According to the report, Harry shares Diana’s “fury at the tabloid press” and also blew “up the family’s cone of silence in a blockbuster interview”.

Ms Pasternak then added: “William is very aligned with his father in his sense of duty above emotion.”

Harry and Meghan permanently stepped back from royal duties in 2021.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said at the time: “Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

“The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.

“While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”

In response, the Sussexes said they “remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role.”

It comes after Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday saw Harry and William reunited for the first time since the Sussexes left the UK.

Royal biographer Penny Junor told The Sun they and Charles stayed at Windsor for an hour after the service.

She said: “This was minutes after the funeral and they were all grieving in their own ways.

“There might have been some greetings. And even that is a positive start.

“There is a lot to be unravelled here. This is a falling-out that has gone on for a long time.

“They need the time, space and the trust.”
