Meghan Markle and Harry warned decision to quit role ‘destroying’ relations with Queen
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced plans to step away from their role as “senior royals” to pursue their charity work free from royal restraints and to become “financially independent.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also confirmed they plan to stop following the Royal Rota system regulating their relationship with the press. But Rhiannon Mills suggested moving away from the Royal Family could threaten their relationship with the public after it was suggested Meghan and Harry failed to alert the Queen of their upcoming announcement.
The Sky News royal correspondent said: “They announced they are going to cut ties with the Royal Rota, which is the traditional way royal stories are covered.
“The likes of me turning up and reporting on them – instead they are going to invite journalists they trust along to their events.
“That shows they are setting themselves up against the press but, more damagingly, they are also destroying some of the important relationships they have with family members.”
Ms Mills added: “That, I think, is what people are going to find hard to stomach, the fact that even the Queen saw this one coming.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry opened up about the struggle they have faced since they married in 2018, with the Duchess of Sussex admitting she did not want to “just survive” as a royal but wanted to enjoy the position.
In the statement announcing their decision, the couple said: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”

Courtiers were said to be “disappointed” with the decision and the Queen is believed not to have been informed Meghan and Harry would announce they would step away.
The Queen’s advisers indicated that the couple had only begun very preliminary talks in the last few days with the 93-year-old monarch and the rest of the family about their desire for a new way of living.
In a terse statement, Buckingham Palace said: “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
Along with their plan to reduce their roles as “senior royals”, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex also said they are planning to split their time between their Grade II Listed Frogmore Cottage in Windsor and North America.

It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA

Their decision would see Meghan and Harry renounce the money they receive annually from the Sovereign Grant which funds the activities of senior members of the Royal Family.
But the Duke of Sussex, as the son of the heir to the throne, is also entitled to receive money from the pot earned through the Duchy of Cornwall. Meghan and Harry have 95 percent of their activities funded through the £21 million annual income Prince Charles cashes in.
The couple however committed to supporting the Queen despite their change of status. According to their newly-launched website, Meghan and Harry “will continue to reflect their sense of duty and allegiance to The Monarch and her legacy in the world as they transition into the new working model.
“As they move to become members of the Royal Family, with financial independence, their commitment to The Monarch is resolute, and they aim to continue to fly the flag for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as called upon.”
