Meghan was told she could not simply demand to try on a piece of jewellery ahead of her wedding with Prince Harry, a source has claimed. Widely reported rumours the Queen had turned down the Duchess of Sussex’ demand to use a tiara she had her heart set on on her wedding day have been rejected by sources who spoke with royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. The authors of Finding Freedom, Meghan and Harry’s unauthorised biography, claimed in their book the Queen played no part in this row.

Instead, the Duke of Sussex felt Angela Kelly, the Queen’s dressmaker and confidant, was dragging her feet when asked to help his fiancé accessing her chosen tiara for a hair trial.

But a source who spoke with the Mail on Sunday claimed Ms Kelly wasn’t stalling because she didn’t want to help the future groom and bride.

Rather, they claimed, the Queen’s confidante tried to explain the Sussexes there was a protocol that needed to be followed before having access to the Crown’s jewels.

The source claimed: “The book’s version of what happened would not be everyone else’s recollection of events and certainly not those who were close to it.

“Angela essentially said, ‘I’m very sorry, that’s not how it works.’

“There’s protocol in place over these jewels.

“They’re kept under very tight lock and key.

“You can’t turn up and demand to have the tiara just because your hairdresser happens to be in town.”

Mr Scobie and Ms Durand are said to have spoken to dozens of people close to the Sussexes as well as courtiers and aides to write their biography and to have verified each claim with two different sources.

Speaking about his book, to be distributed next week, Mr Scobie explained his goal during his podcast On Heir: “I spent time with Prince Harry even before he and Meghan were married.

“I hope it humanises the Duchess of Sussex.

“It’s a beautiful love story and against the odds allows them to thrive in a space where they weren’t thriving before.”

The book explores the blossoming love story between Meghan and Harry, including discussing in details their first date, their feelings and how they remained in touch despite living in two different continents.

It also explores the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ difficult relationship with palace aides, described as “vipers” by a friend of the couple, as well as the rift between Prince Harry and his brother Prince William.

The authors claim the feud between the brothers started when the Duke of Cambridge invited Harry to take as much time he needed to consider his relationship with Meghan.

The Duke of Sussex was said to be livid by this reaction.

The book read: “William may have felt he was acting out of concern, but Harry was offended that his older brother still treated him as if he were immature.

“‘Harry was p*ssed off,’ another source said.

“‘P*ssed off that his brother would ask such a thing. Some felt it was an overreaction.

“‘But then, this sums them up as people — William, the calm and rational one, and Harry, who can’t help but take things far too personally.’

“‘Harry has a heart of gold, but he’s incredibly sensitive,’ a longtime family friend said.

“Though another friend added: ‘Harry could see through William’s words. He was being a snob’.”
