The beast was captured on security cameras in Penelope Bianchi’s home before killing eight chickens housed in her garden. The decorator, 74, scrambled to scare the black bear away by banging frying pans and managed to save the rest of her birds. Following the harrowing attack at her Montecito property, Penelope said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should be on alert.

During their interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired in March, the couple gave viewers a glimpse into their new life in California a year on from Megxit.

They invited cameras into their chicken coop full of rescue hens who live in a little house bearing the sign “Archie’s Chick Inn. Established 2021.”

Penelope, who lives next door to Oprah in Montecito, installed a range of state-of-the art security gadgets in order to prevent attacks at her mansion.

She is urging the Sussexes to do the same to save their chickens from a bear attack.

The interior designer’s home is fitted with sirens, cameras and motion-sensor floodlights.

She had the devices installed after her property was invaded by bears twice last week.

She told The Mirror: “We were having dinner outdoors and heard the chickens making a commotion.

“It’s a good thing we were at home otherwise we’re sure the bear would have broken into the garage to finish off all the chickens.

“It’s the first time this has happened in 40 years.

“Please, please Meghan and Harry, get these devices so your chickens are safe and the bear is safe.”

Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, moved to California in March 2020 asa the Covid pandemic took hold.

Initially, the couple and their son Archie stayed at a mansion owned by American actor Tyler Perry.

In August they purchased an £11 million mansion in Montecito, a Santa Barbara neighbourhood favoured by celebrities.

Their home is set in sprawling gardens and includes an outdoor pool and tennis court.

It is also within walking distance to the beach, a bonus for Meghan who revealed in the Oprah interview that she loves playing with her son on the shoreline.

But while the location may seem ideal for many young couples looking to raise a family, it comes with serious risks of bear attacks.

American black bears typically live in forested areas but are known to venture into suburbs in search of food.

They are capable of manipulating door latches and unscrewing jars in a bid to get food.

Males can weigh up to 550 lbs and females 170 lbs.
