Prince Philip attempted to persuade the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to stick out royal life ahead of their decision to quit as senior members of the Royal Family. Royal biographer Robert Jobson made the claim and said the Duke of Edinburgh tried to encourage the couple to brush criticism to one side.
He told Express.co.uk: “There were racist things that were said about him when he was younger, he was called ‘the hun’, he was called this, he was called that.
“That was quite derogatory stuff but he stuck at it.
“I think he was just trying to say to her and Harry, it’s not easy but you’ve got to knuckle down and get on with it.”
The royal expert, who has recently released a book covering Prince Philip’s 99 years, said the Duke would have been disappointed by Meghan and Harry’s decision to leave the Firm.
He said: “You’ve got to respect it but if they’ve got a life to lead they’ve got to lead it.
“I think we expected that to be within the Royal Family.
“But as they couldn’t, obviously it was disappointing and it’s a dereliction of duty really because you signed up for the gig.”
When probed on whether the Duke would have been dismayed by the Sussexes’ departure, Mr Jobson said: “I would say that he would hope that they would have given more time to it, yes.”

Mr Jobson further discussed the matter in his new biography on the late Duke of Edinburgh.
He said Meghan and Harry’s decision to quit the Royal Family left Philip “furious”.
The expert quoted a senior member of the Royal Household and wrote: “‘To say that the duke feels they let the side down would be a considerable understatement.
“‘He was furious and felt that the Queen and indeed his son the Prince of Wales had always given Prince Harry plenty of scope to live the life that he had wanted.

“‘Yes, he was extremely disappointed by their behaviour and the way he tried to back both the prince of Wales and Her Majesty into a corner by releasing that statement.’”
Mr Jobson said the statement posted on their SussexRoyal Instagram account and website caused the most damage.
He added: “It was that Instagram post and the statement released on the couple’s newly launched and unsanctioned website SussexRoyal.com that did the most damage and created an awkward atmosphere.
“‘It was a question of trust.
“‘There was a feeling that Harry and Meghan had knowingly breached that trust.
“‘It showed a total lack of respect.’”
Following Meghan and Harry’s announcement, the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William held talks with Harry to discuss terms of the couple’s exit.
They agreed the Sussexes’ would formally step down from the end of March 2020, with a review to take place a year later.
Robert Jobson has written several books on the Royal Family, including the No.1 selling book ‘Diana: Closely Guarded Secret’ in 2002.
His most recent book, ‘Prince Philip’s Century: The Extraordinary Life of the Duke of Edinburgh’ is available to buy now.
