Meghan Markle and Harry attacked for environment campaign while royals’ CO2 emission rises
Meghan and Harry’s Instagram account focuses every month on a different issue close to their hearts. This month, the royal couple have turned their attention to the environment, and given their public support to a selected small number of individuals, charities and associations they deem outstanding in their effort to improve the people’s impact on the planet. Among them, there is Oscar-awarded Leonardo DiCaprio and his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which the actor set up in 1998.
The Duke and Duchess announced the new topic they are focusing on by publishing on their SussexRoyal account a collage of nine pictures taken from pages they handpicked for “working towards positive change”.
Meghan and Harry also explained they believe “we are jeopardising this beautiful place we call home” and there is a “ticking clock to protect our planet”, urging their followers to take steps towards slashing their carbon footprint and the impact they have on the planet.
The collage’s caption read: “As a continuation of our monthly social awareness approach to shine a light on the accounts that are working towards positive change, for the month of July we turn our attention to the environment.
“There is a ticking clock to protect our planet – with climate change, the deterioration of our natural resources, endangerment of sacred wildlife, the impact of plastics and microplastics, and fossil fuel emissions, we are jeopardising this beautiful place we call home – for ourselves and for future generations.
“Let’s save it. Let’s do our part.”
The message also included a quote from Prince Harry, who said society’s economic growth should not come at the expense of the planet.
He explained: “Environmental damage has been treated as a necessary by-product of economic growth.
“So deeply ingrained is this thinking that it has been considered part of the natural order that humankind’s development comes at the expense of our planet.
“Only now are we starting to notice and understand the damage that we’ve been causing.
“With nearly 7.7 billion people inhabiting this Earth, every choice, every footprint, every action makes a difference.”
Meghan and Harry also followed a total of 15 accounts focused on the environment, including Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate activist who started the movement Fridays for Future, three-time mayor of New York Mike Bloomberg and the Rhino Conservation Botswana.
While some of the royal fans complimented Meghan and Harry on their new focus, others attacked the Duke and Duchess for not being a good example when it comes to cutting CO2 emissions.
One wrote: “Maybe stop flying round everywhere at our expense first, lead by example!”
Another cited the Royal Family’s new financial report highlighting the Royal Household’s emissions doubled last years, saying: “Royal Family’s carbon emissions doubled last year in 2019 CO2 emission total for the Royal Family’s business travel was 3,344 tonnes, compared to 1,687 tonnes in 2018.”
They angry commenter added: “How about you guys STOP PREACHING to the world what do do and actually DO what you believe.
“ACTIONS speak louder that words.”
And another wrote: “So let’s get this right, us commoners shouldn’t go on exotic holidays only leave that to the Royal family.
“Harry you might want to show this to your wife. Works both ways! Practice what you preach.”
