Meghan Markle admits giving personal information to Finding Freedom authors

The Duchess of Sussex gave a friend permission to secretly reveal the existence of a ‘private’ letter to her father through a biography, court papers reveal.

In documents lodged with the High Court, she said she intervened because she was concerned that ‘her father’s narrative’ – that she had abandoned him and cut off contact – might be repeated.

As a result she allowed a friend to pass on her side of the story to Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand for their tell-all book Finding Freedom.

The detail could impact Meghan’s court case against the publisher of The Mail on Sunday, Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL), which she is suing for publishing parts of a handwritten letter she wrote to her estranged father Thomas.

Lawyers on behalf of the newspaper allege that the Duchess breached her own privacy because she ‘permitted’ details about her life to be shared with authors of the explosive biography, including ‘information about the letter’.

The court documents lodged today said the Duchess gave her own version of events to someone else to pass on, so ‘the true position… could be communicated to the authors to prevent any further misrepresentation.’

But the document says neither Meghan or Harry co-operated with the authors to reveal their ‘version of events’.

Lawyers for the duchess said in their court filing: ‘[Meghan] was concerned that her father’s narrative in the media that she had abandoned him and had not even tried to contact him (which was false) would be repeated, when in fact she had tried to call him, and text him, and had even written a letter to him to try to persuade him to stop dealing with the media; and he had written back to her.

‘Accordingly, she indicated to a person whom she knew had already been approached by the authors that the true position as above (which that person and several others who knew the Claimant already knew) could be communicated to the authors to prevent any
further misrepresentation.

‘She does not know to what extent or in what terms this one item of information concerning her communications with her father was shared with the authors.’
