Meghan Markle and Harry: Public interest ‘waning’ says Huntley

Meghan and Harry’s departure from the Royal Family undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the Palace a year ago. They had spent less than two years as a married couple on the royal frontline when they claimed they had “no other option” but to step down for a life of financial independence. Such a short period in the royal limelight left many questioning whether Meghan had truly comprehended what life would be like behind Palace walls before she had signed up to it.

The Duke and Duchess then raised eyebrows when they opted to move to Meghan’s home state in the US, California.

The couple are now moving into the entertainment industry through deals with Netflix and Spotify — this is the Duchess’ former sector, as she used to be an actress.

An insider claimed this week that they “don’t regret” moving to the States, while other critics have alleged their departure “would change the Royal Family forever”.

Historian Robert Lacey said Harry had “finally found a solution” to the curse of being a “royal spare” who would never inherit the throne — implying younger generations could mimic his shocking decision.

But as the honeymoon period fades and the 12-month review of their post-royal life approaches, fans are questioning if Meghan really understood what Harry was leaving behind for her.

It also calls into doubt how the Sussexes could have changed the royal institution if they did not understand their role in it.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, royal author Angela Levin said Harry had considered leaving the Firm before, but was held back by duty.

He wanted to “get out” after returning from a tour in Afghanistan in 2008 — but soon realised Prince Philip, the Queen and Prince William all needed his assistance so he felt obliged to stay.

BBC Presenter Nick Robinson said: “But there is another woman in his life now, a woman who clearly isn’t satisfied with how that model is working, who appears – from what we can judge – is saying, ‘we need to get out, you need to get out’.”

Ms Levin suggested that Meghan clearly did not understand the core principle of the Royal Family — working as a team.

She explained: “Meghan mentioned working as a team with Prince Harry at the engagement interview she did with the BBC – but it seems that she doesn’t really like teams after all.

“The main problem is that she is a celebrity and Prince Harry is a royal. There is a huge difference in that.”

She also claimed Harry said, “he absolutely did not want to be a celebrity” — but many critics believe that the couple have now stepped into that sphere.

As neither have production experience, it is likely that they relied on their names and royal status to secure their highly-lucrative deals with streaming giants Netflix and Spotify.

Back on the Today programme which aired last year, Ms Levin said, “I think Meghan can’t understand” that Harry does not want to be a celebrity.

She continued: “I think she can’t understand what being a royal is and what duty and protocol and antiquated practices are. I think it’s been very hard for her to do that.”

Instead, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex seem to have reverted to the lifestyle Meghan had prior to marrying into royalty.

As she wrote on her now-defunct blog, The Tig: “I, in fact, have always had a foot in the world of entertainment as well as the world of public service.”

This echoes the layout of their new venture, Archewell, which has three arms: Archewell Audio for podcasts; Archewell Productions for documentaries and series; and the Archewell Foundation.

Additionally, a source told The Times last year that Meghan wanted to leave the Firm because she thought, “it’s not working for me”.

Harry was subsequently torn to choose between his wife and his royal duties.

The source added: “I think it will genuinely break his heart to leave.”

It remains to be seen what ties to the Firm the couple will maintain following their upcoming Megxit review.
