Meghan Markle has claimed she was prevented from getting medical help while suffering suicidal thoughts during her time in the Royal Family.
The Duchess of Sussex opened up about her mental health struggles after a run of critical press stories in the latest episode of a tell-all Netflix series.
Harry revealed he ‘hates myself’ for not doing more to support his wife during the depths of her depression, which came after her pregnancy was announced in 2018.
The couple claim media coverage of the pair switched in tone because of their popularity, which had a negative effect on both of them.
Recounting her mindset during that period, Meghan says: ‘It was like, “all of this will stop if I’m not here”.
‘And that was the scariest thing about it, is that it was such clear thinking.’
She adds later: ‘I wanted to go somewhere to get help but I wasn’t allowed to. ‘
‘They were concerned about how that would look for the institution.’

Speaking about that period, Harry said: ‘I was devastated, I knew that she was struggling, we were both struggling, but I never thought that it would get to that stage and the fact that it got to that stage, I felt angry and ashamed.
‘I didn’t deal with it particularly well. I dealt with it as institutional-Harry as opposed to husband-Harry.
‘What took over my feeling was my royal role. I had been trained to worry more about “what are people going to think if we don’t go to this event, we’re going to be late”.
‘Looking back on it now I hate myself for it. What she needed from me was so much more than I was able to give.’
Speaking about the royal machine’s attitude towards his wife’s mental health problems, Harry said: ‘They knew how bad it was, they thought, “why couldn’t she just deal with it”, as if to say, “well, everybody else has had to deal with it, why can’t see deal with it?”
‘But this was different, it was really different – but actually, if you strip all of that away, and say, “okay, fine, it was exactly the same – so, do we still believe that she should have just sucked it up like other members of the family?”
Harry also said he pressed his father to intervene with newspaper editors in a bid to block negative coverage but was told by Charles: ‘Darling boy, you can’t take on the media, the media will always be the media.’
Speaking about her daughter’s suicidal thoughts for the first time, Doria Ragland said: ‘I remember her telling me that she had wanted to take her own life.
‘And that really broke my heart because I knew – well, I knew that it was bad but to constantly be picked at by these vultures, just picking away at her spirit, that she would actually think of not wanting to be here, that…
‘That’s not an easy one for mom to hear, and I can’t protect her, H can’t protect her.’
Netflix released the first three episodes of the documentary series last week after months of speculation.
Despite not providing the revelations many had expected, the release did lead to a lot of controversy.
Producers were accused of misleading viewers with the choice of images used to imply harassment or intrusion into Harry and Meghan’s lives.
Netflix also said ‘members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within this series’ but this is disputed’.
An anonymous Palace source briefed that no attempts to reach them for right to reply were actually made by producers.
The couple have signed a deal with streaming service worth a reported £88 million.
There are expected to be more revelations about their split from the royal family when Harry’s memoir is released in a few weeks.
‘Spare’, a tell-all account of his life in the firm, will be released on January 10.
