Kate and Prince William’s children are a source of great interest to most royal fans, as they represent the future of the monarchy. While Meghan and Prince Harry’s son — Archie Harrison — is going to be raised as a private citizen away from the public eye, he remains in the line of succession and part of the Royal Family. Kate and Meghan’s pregnancies have therefore garnered a great deal of public interest — but, despite their privileged positions, it is not always easy to follow the royal rules while carrying a child.

A resurfaced US Weekly feature which was published in 2013, when Prince George was a baby, revealed a surprising word to do with maternity which the Queen cannot stand.

The article, called ‘The Queen’s Royal Pet Peeves’, explained: “Her Majesty finds the term [pregnant] ‘vulgar’, says the Palace source.”

Instead, the Queen uses the term “in the family way” to describe pregnant women.

However, neither Meghan or Kate appeared to take any notice of the Queen’s rule when they announced they were expecting.

Kate announced her first pregnancy — with Prince George — through a St James’ Palace spokesman in 2012.

They said: “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.

“The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

“As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter.”

Meghan’s announcement in 2018 was similar, although she was able to announce the pregnancy after she had her 12-week scan — while morning sickness pushed Kate to reveal she was expecting early.

Meghan and Harry also made their announcement through social media rather than through a spokesman.

Kensington Palace tweeted in October, five months after their wedding, that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019”, rather than using the Queen’s preferred term “in the family way”.

The royals are also said to follow a rule that the baby’s sex cannot be revealed prior to the birth — although Princess Diana is thought to have broken this particular tradition.

She allegedly knew both of her children were going to be boys when she was carrying them.

Cosmopolitan also claimed in April 2019 that pregnant royals still have to wear closed-toed shoes, regardless of how swollen their feet become.

However, both royal parents do also get maternity leave, which is estimated to be six months.

Yet, Cosmopolitan claimed Kate bent this rule too.

The article read: “Even if you only look at Kate Middleton, the amount of time that she took for each of her three children was different for each kiddo.

“After Prince George was born, she made an appearance just a month later, but for Princess Charlotte, she took five months off.”

Meghan also took maternity leave, although she chose to make an appearance at a handful of events including Trooping the Colour in 2018 — only a few weeks after her son’s birth.
