The Duke and Duchess of Sussex quit the Royal Family 18 months ago and have since launched themselves into a number of ambitious projects, including with some of the world’s leading streaming platforms. Royal commentator Daniela Elser claimed this year had been set up to be “12 months of world conquering” for Meghan and Harry, but has described the past nine months as a “bust for the now California-based duo”.

She wrote on Australian website News.Au: “Let’s be honest: No one has really gotten the 2021 they wanted have they?

“And that includes Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Scratch the surface and this year has been a bust for the now California-based duo.

“Ignore the family feuding that has dominated this year’s Sussex-related news and, aside from the joyful arrival of the couple’s second child Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, even Sherlock Holmes would find it tough to unearth a major win for the royal defectors.”

Ms Elser cited a number of controversial decisions the couple have made this year which have attracted scrutiny.

Meghan and Harry sat down with Oprah Winfrey in March and launched a series of damning accusations against the Royal Family.

This resulted in the palace responding “recollections may vary”.

Ms Elser suggested this move backfired for the couple and claimed the “barrage only led to the Royal Family’s approval rating shooting up”.

The Duke of Sussex briefly returned to the UK in April for Prince Philip’s funeral and during the service in Windsor he was separated from Prince William by his cousin Peter Phillips, amid a reported feud between the two brothers.

Meghan did not attend the funeral and instead the Duchess, who was pregnant at the time, followed medical advice to stay in the US.

Ms Elser said the atmosphere surrounding Prince Harry’s return “seemed to resemble a live-action version of Frozen, only a tad icier”.

Meghan gave birth to her second child Lilibet Diana in June, but the choice of name divided opinion as it is a nickname used by the Queen.

The royal commentator also suggested August did not go to schedule for Meghan and Harry and claimed the couple were snubbed by Barack Obama for his star-studded 60th birthday bash.

Meanwhile, earlier this month Piers Morgan was cleared by the regulator Ofcom following comments he made about Meghan after the Oprah interview – the Duchess had even filed a personal complaint.

Ms Elser said: “It wasn’t meant to be this way. This year promised to be the biggest and brightest yet for Harry and Meghan.

“Unshackled from the palace, unfettered from all that pesky hierarchy protocol, they seemed poised for 12 months of world conquering.

“Having notched up a rumoured $180 million in deals, they could now guarantee they could keep the lights on and would get their annual invitations to the Oscars.

“But all of that promise has not panned out.

“Instead, what has defined this year (so far at least) is the couple solidifying their status as palace pariahs while failing to make much of any sort of mark on the philanthropic landscape.”
