The Queen delivered an address in which she praised the “friendship, spirit of unity and achievements” of those fighting the coronavirus pandemic around the world. CBS are due to broadcast Oprah Winfrey’s unprecedented two-hour interview with Meghan and Harry later tonight.

Viewers in the UK will be able to watch it on Monday night at 9pm on ITV.

On Twitter Phil Dampier, who has written numerous books about the Royal Family, shared his sadness that the Sussexes’ didn’t feature in the Commonwealth celebrations.

He tweeted: “Just watching the Commonwealth Day broadcast and genuinely reflected how sad and disappointing it is that Harry and Meghan gave up an opportunity to make a real difference…for what?”

Whilst Commonwealth Day is on Monday it was marked by a special broadcast on Sunday.

It featured a number of leading royals including the Queen, Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince Charles appeared from Westminster Abbey where the annual Commonwealth Day service is traditionally held.

The Queen delivered her address from Windsor where she has been spending the current lockdown.

She commented: “The testing times experienced by so many have led to a deeper appreciation of the mutual support and spiritual sustenance we enjoy by being connected to others.”

CBS has released a number of promotional clips ahead of the extraordinary interview’s broadcast tonight.

In one Ms Winfrey asks Meghan: “How do you feel about the Palace hearing you speak your truth today?”

The Duchess replies: “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.

“And, if that comes with risk of losing things, there is a lot that has been lost already.”

Harry and Meghan stepped down as working members of the Royal Family in March 2020 and moved to California.

Their final engagement as senior Royals was the 2020 Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey.

Appearing on this year’s Commonwealth broadcast Prince Charles said: “The coronavirus pandemic has affected every country of the Commonwealth, cruelly robbing countless people of their lives and livelihoods, disrupting our societies and denying us the human connections which we so dearly cherish.

“Amidst such heart-breaking suffering, however, the extraordinary determination, courage and creativity with which people have responded has been an inspiration to us all.

“This pandemic has shown us the true nature of a global emergency.

“We have learned that human health, economic health and planetary health are fundamentally interconnected and that pandemics, climate change and biodiversity loss are existential threats which know no borders.”

Last month Meghan and Harry lost their remaining royal patronages after confirming they won’t be returning as working members of the family.

The Prince, who spent ten years in the army, was also stripped of his honorary military positions.
