The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made several explosive claims in their interview with Oprah, including that there were “concerns and conversations” about how dark their baby’s skin might be. The Queen responded with a statement on Tuesday in which she said the claim was “concerning” and promising that the family would look into it privately. Buckingham Palace wrote: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.”

It continued: “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”

Pod Save the Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.

Mr Myers said in the podcast this week that it will be “very interesting” to see how this is dealt with.

He argued that if Meghan and Harry do not get an apology privately or do not think the internal investigation was adequate, he has “no doubt” they will “hit the nuclear button” and go back to the media.

He suggested they may ring up Oprah or indeed talk to her CBS colleague and friend Gayle King.

He said: “I think that really relates to the Queen’s statement ‒ ‘recollections may vary’ ‒that’s going to be very, very interesting to see how that is dealt with.

“Because if that does become an issue and Harry and Meghan either don’t get an apology privately or they are not satisfied with the way that internal investigation ‒ if we can call it that ‒ goes, then I have no doubt that they’ll hit the nuclear button again.

“They’ll be straight on the phone to Oprah or Gayle King and they’ll be doing more interviews.

“This is definitely not one where they’ve had their say and that’s it now ‒ they will definitely keep talking to the media if they feel that’s the only way to get their voice heard.”

Mr Myers also addressed something Meghan’s father Thomas Markle said in his response to the interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

Thomas suggested that the comment about the royal baby’s potential skin colour may have just been a “stupid question” ‒ in other words, more clumsy phrasing than an expression of deep-seated racism.

However, Mr Myers said he does not buy that explanation, because the Sussexes were clearly deeply upset by it.

Indeed, they were so aggrieved that they told the whole world about it in an interview with Oprah.

He said: “Thomas Markle said when he was interviewed on Good Morning Britain yesterday that it may have been a ‘dumb statement ‒ I mean, I don’t like that phrase anyway, a ‘stupid question’, he did say ‘dumb statement’ as well.

“But he made the point of maybe it was clumsy, maybe it was a foolish, clumsy statement to have made.

“But I don’t really buy that because I think if Harry and Meghan were that aggrieved by it and they knew what attention that would bring by telling a global TV programme about the statement that was made to them, they knew what attention that would bring.

“So they obviously feel very, very upset about it.”

He added we do not know the context for this, but he questioned whether that even matters now given the “level of revulsion” everyone has had about it.

Overall, he said his “jaw was on the floor” for the whole two hours of the couple’s conversation with Oprah.
