Royal experts have hit back at the argument that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the Royal Family for privacy reasons, saying that as a royal figure and an actress, they’re “used to being in the public eye”. Rather than escape the monarchy to lead private lives, the couple wished to “control the narrative” which they were unable to do whilst serving the Queen as working royals.

Royally Us host Molly Mulshine said: “I get why so many people think that because it’s an easy assumption to make and it’s repeated over and over again so yes, it is easy to think that’s the way it is.

“I think they just wanted to control the narrative, they wanted to feel like they could be free to issue denials and lawsuits whenever they want to.

“I think that that’s the reason they wanted to leave.”

Her fellow co-host Joe Drake added: “I think I’ve mentioned this on the show before but Prince Harry has obviously been in the public eye since he was born, Meghan Markle was an actress, was in showbusiness – these are people that are used to not being private.

“As much as they want privacy sometimes, they’re used to being in the public eye and I think they’ve come to terms with that.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their intention to withdraw from the Royal Family in January 2020.

In a statement, they said that after “many months of reflection and internal discussion”, they would be stepping back and wished to raise their son in North America whilst continuing to support the Queen.

The announcement came after months of intense tabloid scrutiny which had led to the Duke and Duchess taking a lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday.

Both Prince Harry and Meghan have spoken out on numerous occasions about their difficulties with the British media, accusing the tabloids of using ‘racial, colonial undertones’ in their articles about Meghan.

The Duchess successfully won her lawsuit battle against the Mail on Sunday after they published extracts of a private letter that she had written to her estranged father Thomas Markle.

Initially, it was believed that the couple wished to retreat to North America to raise their family away from the public spotlight.

They have since come under criticism for conducting a range of high-profile interviews and signing multi-million-pound deals with streaming giants.

During their explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, the couple revealed that internal struggles with the Royal Family had also contributed to their decision to leave.

Prince Harry and Meghan accused Palace staff of failing to protect the Duchess when damaging tabloid articles were released and for neglecting their mental health.

Their bombshell interview was criticised by people such as Piers Morgan who has said on numerous occasions that the couple “don’t want privacy, they just want to control the media”.

It has recently been announced that Prince Harry is due to publish his memoirs next year and that Meghan has embarked on her first solo project with Netflix.

It is estimated that Penguin Random House paid up to $20million as an advance for the Duke’s “intimate and heartfelt” memoirs.
