According to Montecito locals, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be hunting for a new house. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly considering moving out of the £11 million mansion they bought months after relocating to the US. While the Sussexes have not commented on their potential move, it is believed the couple are looking for more privacy as their neighbourhood experiences witnessed property crime.

According to Santa Barbara News Press, Meghan and Harry are considering leaving their nine-bedroom home and relocating to a nearby neighbourhood that has “a collection of multimillion-dollar mansions with miles of horse trails and a private beach.”

But royal commentators have questioned why the Duke and Duchess are choosing to live in California, known to be a hotspot for celebrities, if privacy and security are areas of concern.

Hosts of Us Weekly’s Royally Us, Christine Ross and Christina Garibaldi, discussed the Sussexes’ potential move on this week’s episode of their podcast. But Ms Garibaldi argued that California might not be the place for the couple and suggested they move somewhere a “little bit more remote”.

She said: “It seems like they are shopping for a very private estate in hope ranch in California and that they have determined that this Montecito mansion does not properly accommodate them. Maybe they want more privacy, maybe they’re looking for something a little bit bigger, maybe they don’t like their neighbours…”

Ms Ross raised the Sussexes’ concerns surrounding security, saying there have been lots of discussions about “calls to the police and lots of concerns over their safety and privacy. But that neighbourhood is so full of other celebrities that maybe it is really easy for paparazzi to be wandering around and people wandering around hoping to catch a glimpse.

“They just feel a bit unsafe and kind of fishbowl. I think that this new house that they might be shopping for could be a bit more isolated — not as close to as many big celebrities and just giving them a bit more privacy.”

Ms Garibaldi argued: “But then maybe move out of California and go a little bit more remote. If you want that ultra-private life, maybe California is not the place for it.”

Meghan and Harry currently live in the star-studded enclave of Montecito which is home to the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey. The area has recently been a target of burglary specialising in high-value property crime.

The issue led Santa Barbara’s Sheriff’s department to install six license plate recognition cameras around the area. The Montecito Association emailed local residents saying that the cameras would be installed “in response to the high-value property crime we’ve experienced recently.”

It comes just a few months after it was revealed that police were alerted to two intruder scares at Meghan and Harry’s mansion within just 12 days in May. The Sussexes were believed to be at home with their two children — three-year-old Archie and one-year-old Lilibet — when the alarms were triggered.

Police records show that officers visited the home on May 19, the Duke and Duchess’ fourth wedding anniversary, at 5.44pm. They returned on May 31 at 3.21pm after a second intruder report; this was around the same time the family of four left California to attend the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London. Both intrusions were recorded as trespassing, property crimes and ‘suspicious circumstances’ by police.

It was also reported that Santa Barbara police have received six security calls to the Sussexes’ home in the last 14 months.

The Hope Ranch community, where Meghan and Harry are said to be house hunting, is an elite neighbourhood in Santa Barbabra. With a population of approximately 2,200 people, it is known to be quieter than Montecito.

The affluent community boasts a members-only country club, golf club, tennis courts, picnic grounds and a network of equestrian trails, with about 10 percent of the population owning their own horses. Residents of Hope Ranch also have access to their own private beach and walking trails.

Like Montecito, it is home to a slew of high-profile residents including Snoop Dogg, owner of the Santa Barbara News Press Wendy McCaw and Tarzan star Ron Ely.

However, according to TMZ, many locals are not in favour of the royal couple moving in, with some “worried” that Meghan and Harry will bring a “circus” to the area.

Sources close to the Homeowners Association at Hope Ranch told the outlet: “We’re told nobody in Hope Ranch holds ill will toward the Sussexes personally, but the fact is…many feel they’re going to bring a circus to their quiet, super-private burb…since they’re so famous and controversial. Our sources say that can present very real-world problems.”

The news comes after Meghan and Harry’s return to the US following their stay in the UK for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. The Duke and Duchess joined other members of the Royal Family in mourning the late monarch, who died on September 8 in Balmoral.

Following her death, it has been reported that Meghan and Harry are making last-minute changes to their big media projects including a rumoured Netflix documentary series and the Prince’s memoir.

In an interview with Page Six, a source claimed they want to make edits to “downplay much of what they have said about King Charles III, Camilla, Queen Consort, and the Prince and Princess of Wales”.
