Meghan and Harry to produce Netflix film after dropping £3m on rights to novel

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to work on their next big Netflix production after securing the rights to a best-selling book.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who signed a multimillion-dollar deal with the streaming giant in 2020, will move away from their personal documentaries into fiction production.

The royal couple have since gained the rights to the romantic novel Meet Me At The Lake by Carley Fortune, according to The Sun.

It is believed the “love story” which echoed the Duke and Duchess’s real-life relationship cost up to £3million.

An insider told the publication: “The themes of the book gripped the couple and it was chosen for their first adaptation with Netflix.”

PR guru Mark Borkowski went on to question why publishers Penguin Random House sold it to the royal couple.

He added: “The rights for this could have cost up to £3million.

“Although if it’s a best-seller, you wouldn’t be handing it to Harry and Meghan.

“There are some amazing drama producers out there. Why would you give away a prize asset?”

It comes after the couple released a six-part docuseries on Netflix in December 2022 which explored their private lives since stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex starred in the show with Liz Garbus, a filmmaker, who Meghan described as a “seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired”.

The royal couple signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the streaming giant in September 2020 to produce documentaries, docuseries, feature films, scripted shows and children’s programming but have only released this docuseries so far.

Meghan and Harry saw their commercial deal with Spotify come to an end in June. Meghan’s podcast, Archetypes, was dropped by the streaming giant after 12 episodes.

The 41-year-old hosted only one series as part of the deal which ran for 12 episodes from August 2022, chatting to celebrities, historians and experts about the history of stereotypes leveled against women.

In December, Archetypes won the top podcast award at the People’s Choice Award in Los Angeles.
