Meghan and Harry to join Royal Family for Jubilee service at St Paul's
Harry and Meghan are expected to appear alongside the Royal Family for the first time in two years today at the Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving.
Royal watchers caught only a brief glimpse of the Sussexes as the four days of festivities kicked off on Thursday with Trooping the Colour and a spectacular flypast by the Red Arrows.
Any fears they might somehow overshadow the event were put to rest as the couple kept a low profile, with no sign of the Netflix film crew which had followed them at the Invictus Games.
They could only be seen at a window overlooking Horse Guards Parade playfully shushing the children of Harry’s cousin Zara Tindall and chatting with the Queen’s cousin, the Duke of Kent.
Their mode of transport is unknown, and it remains unclear what they did afterwards.
The Queen had already ruled that the balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace would be limited to working members of the Royal Family, with their children where appropriate.
Royal commentator Omid Scobie, who is friendly with Harry and Meghan, suggested their daughter Lilibet finally met her namesake and great-grandmother for the first time in Windsor after the Sussexes had lunch with the Queen.
While the couple are expected to attend today’s ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral, they are said to be sticking to their pledge to keep as ‘low-profile as possible’.
Mr Scobie earlier tweeted: ‘Details below on tomorrow’s #PlatinumJubilee Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s Cathedral.
‘The service, which I’m told the Sussexes WILL be attending, includes bible readings, prayers and hymns, ‘to recognise and give thanks for The Queen’s reign, faith and lifetime of service’.’
It will be the Sussex’s first appearance with the Royal Family since the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey in March 2020, shortly before they officially stepped down as senior royals.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mr Scobie said: ‘I spoke with people close to the couple… who said that they want to be as low-profile as possible during this trip.
‘It’s almost hard to believe, but I think yesterday Trooping the Colour was a great example. We didn’t really catch sight of them on TV cameras.’
Mr Scobie said that the couple hold a ‘warm and close’ relationship with the Queen.
He also spoke about their daughter Lilibet’s upcoming first birthday on Saturday, saying she would have met her namesake the Queen for the first time in person at Windsor on Thursday.
The author said: ‘Of course we know the Queen went back to Windsor Castle yesterday, the couple went back to Windsor as well where they’re staying at Frogmore Cottage.
‘So that would have been the first moment or the first chance for her to meet her namesake.’
