Meghan and Harry tell how ‘smiling’ Archie was on Africa tour – ‘Happiest he’s ever been’

The Duke of Sussex said the five-month-old tot was “bouncing up and down” during the 10-day tour of South Africa as he spoke candidly about life as a father in a behind-the-scenes ITV documentary. Meghan, 38, and Harry, 35, brought their son into the spotlight during a visit to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu, thrilling royal fans who had not seen footage of the baby since he was just two days’ old. The youngest member of the royal family warmed hearts with his cheeky grin, playful spirit and striking resemblance to his father.

And now the new parents have revealed they have never before seen their little boy look so happy than in South Africa.

Speaking to broadcaster Tom Bradby for the documentary entitled ‘Harry and Meghan: An African Journey’, the Sussexes opened up about Archie’s developing personality and revealed the baby was staring out at the landscape as the plane landed in the port city of Cape Town.

Harry said: “He clearly loves Africa as well because he was out there looking out the window.

“He’s found his voice now. He is bouncing up and down, he’s making more noises that he has ever made before and he is smiling all the time.”

Meghan chimed in: “We thought he was happy before. He is the happiest here. He’s been so chatty the past two days.”

The royal tour was hailed as a massive success for the couple following a summer of negative headlines which saw them face fierce criticism for their use of private jets.

It was the first overseas trip for the family-of-three since little Archie was born on May 6.

When asked if he would consider moving to the continent, Harry said: “I don’t know where we could live in Africa” while acknowledging Cape Town would be an amazing spot for the family to set themselves up.

But he quickly added “with all the problems going on now” he does not think it is a realistic option at the moment.

The duchess spoke candidly about how she has dealt with the scrutiny in the media since marrying into the royal family.

She said: “It’s hard. I don’t think anybody can understand that.”

As he has settled into his new role as a father, Harry has emerged as a protective family man looking to shield his wife and son from the spotlight.

Meghan, who quit her acting career to move across the pond and start a new life with the Queen’s grandson, said despite her previous fame she was ill-prepared for the role of a royal family member.

She said while she has done her best to put on a brave face regardless of what is going on in her home, this tactic can prove “internally damaging”.

“It’s not enough to just survive something that’s not the point of life,” she said.

The new mum said she is trying to “take each day as it comes”.

She added: “The good thing is that I’ve got my baby and I’ve got my husband”.
