After stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family last year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex secured multimillion-dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify in a bid to become financially independent from the Firm.

Last Sunday, the couple sat down with Oprah Winfrey for their explosive tell-all interview, marking their first interview since stepping away from the Royal Family.

However, despite signing a £100million deal with Netflix, the couple agreed with Oprah to have their interview aired on TV so viewers could watch for free, according to insiders.

The LA Times reported more than 17 million people tuned in to watch the explosive interview.

They claimed Oprah said it would be nearly impossible to draw in millions of people to watch on a single night if it was not broadcast on television.

It is also believed those on set during the filming of the interview last month had to sign NDAs so they could not reveal any of the claims the couple made.

Joe Pugliese, who took pictures of the interview, said: “Sorry I just can’t talk about it.

“Harpo has this watertight.”

Harpo Productions is Oprah’s own company and produced the two-hour tell-all interview.

During the interview, both Meghan and Harry made shocking allegations of racism within the institution.

Meghan claimed there were conversations about the colour of Archie’s skin before he was born.

Harry, 36, also claimed his father cut him off financially and stopped taking his calls when he and Meghan stepped down as members of the Firm last year.

Following the interview, #AbolishTheMonarchy was trending on Twitter and concerns over the future of the Monarchy were raised.

Palace aides issued a statement after two days of crisis talks over the fallout from Sunday’s show.

The statement read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Meghan and Harry.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“While some recollections may vary, they are taken seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”

Royal experts have said the Royal Family are not accepting Meghan and Harry’s claims as “gospel”.

Other claims made during the interview included Meghan saying her time as a Royal was almost “unsurvivable”.

She revealed: “I just didn’t want to be alive any more. And that was a very real and clear and frightening and constant thought.

“When I joined that family, that was the last time until we came here that I saw my passport, my driver’s licence, my keys, all that gets turned over.

“I went to the institution and I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help, said I had never felt that way before and need to go somewhere, and I was told that I couldn’t, that it wouldn’t be good for the institution.
