Meghan and Harry 'quit social media' after online abuse

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reported to have left social media for good, after experiencing a torrent of online abuse.

They have over 10 million followers on their official @SussexRoyal account on Instagram, but it has lain dormant since March last year when they stepped back from royal duties.

They have said up a new charitable foundation called Archewell, which has no social media presence as of yet.

A source told the Sunday Times that they had ‘no plans’ to use networking sites for their new project, and were ‘very unlikely’ to use any personal profiles either.

Meghan has previously spoken about the burden of being on the receiving end of hateful remarks online.

She appeared on the Teenager Therapy podcast, and said she felt isolated and ‘othered’ while pregnant with son Archie.

‘I’m told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the entire world, male or female,’ she said.

‘Now, eight months of that I wasn’t even visible — I was on maternity leave or with a baby … If people are saying things about you that aren’t true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging … That’s so big, you can’t even think of what that feels like.’

Prince Harry also added that it is ‘very easy to be sucked in and consumed by negativity’, but everyone has ‘the choice to be able to cut that out of our lives’.

He said: ‘Hate following has become a thing, you don’t need to do that. Just as much as we worry about, be concerned, and take notice of what we put in our bellies as a diet, the same applies for our eyes and our mind, what we’re consuming is affecting us.

‘For me, I made the choice not to read it, not to see it, and to remove myself from that, and to very much focus on the uplifting and the hopeful side.’

In their final post to @Sussex Royal, the couple said: ‘What’s most important right now is the health and wellbeing of everyone across the globe and finding solutions for the many issues that have presented themselves as a result of this pandemic.

‘As we all find the part we are to play in this global shift and changing of habits, we are focusing this new chapter to understand how we can best contribute.

‘While you may not see us here, the work continues.’
