Meghan and Harry are reportedly looking to leave their Montecito mansion for an exclusive California community. The neighbourhood of Hope Ranch hosts a collection of multi-million dollar mansions with miles of horse trails and a private beach. The news comes amid reports of high value property crime in Montecito.
The couple’s current $14million mansion in Montecito was purchased in June 2020 shortly after the Duke and Duchess’s decision to take a step back from Royal life.
The 10,000 square foot home boasts nine bedrooms and 19 bathrooms as well as a private cinema, gym and spa as well as a wine cellar.
However, according to The Santa Barbara News-Press, the couple are considering a move to the exclusive suburb around 10 miles up the California coast, where houses sell for as much as $22million (£19.6million).
The news of the potential move comes following reports that Montecito has been targeted by “sophisticated out-of-the-area theft gangs” focusing on high-value property crimes.
Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department is installing six number plate recognition cameras to combat the gangs with an additional 19 installed around the wider area.
The solar powered cameras are meant to assist police to see who has been in the area when a crime has taken place.
In an email to residents, including Meghan and Harry, the Montecito Association said the cameras would be installed “in response to the high-value property crime we’ve experienced recently”.
It added: “These crimes are being committed by sophisticated out-of-the-area theft gangs.”
Other A-listers in the area include Katie Perry, Orlando Bloom, Ellen DeGeneres, Rob Lowe and Jennifer Aniston among other celebrities.
According to The Sun, undersheriff for Santa Barbara County, told an online meeting of locals: “We’ve had some problems with professional burglars coming into the Montecito community.
“We want these cameras up and running as quickly as possible to capture these folks as they come and go from the area.”
The cameras can identify the make, model, colour and number plate of a vehicle, however they don’t use facial recognition technology and won’t be used to enforce traffic laws.
Since moving to California, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have signed deals with Netflix and Spotify reportedly worth tens of millions of dollars.
In addition, Prince Harry is in a deal to release his memoirs, although the release date may be pushed to 2023 due to the death of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Meghan and Harry live in Montecito with their two children, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, aged three, and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, one.
