Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped down as working royals of the British Royal Family last year. They have since moved to Montecito, California, in a bid for a more “private life” and have not returned to the UK together, with only the Duke of Sussex making two brief visits since their departure. Investigative journalist Tom Bower suggested the couple is now running the risk of “isolating themselves” in a bid to keep hold of the “narrative” about them.

He claimed the couple are “so desperate to control the narrative” that cannot risk letting outsiders influence what they have made for themselves.

Mr Bower told Closer magazine the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have “totally isolated themselves”.

“They seem to think they will be stronger by cutting people out, but they’re really just alienating their families,” he said.

“I think it’s very sad for them both, and their children.”

The royal commentator claimed the strategy might have been influenced by the Duchess, whom he claimed to be a “very stubborn person.

He continued: “But I think eventually even she’ll realise that this isolated world she and Harry have built for themselves was a poisonous choice.

“They seem so desperate to control the narrative that they can’t risk anyone else influencing it.

“This will simply cause more damage to them in the future, when their children grow up with no family around them.”

“The whole situation is odd, and it’s all the more strange considering how Meghan was in her younger years,” Bower said.

He added: “From what I can see, she became a completely different person when her career began taking off, when she joined [US drama] Suits and when she began dating Harry.”

The couple’s first child, Archie, was born in the UK and spent time around his family before the move.

Harry has returned to England just twice, for the funeral of his late grandfather, Prince Philip, and the unveiling of a statue of his late mother, Princess Diana.

It is unknown if the pair will return at all this year, although there has been speculation that they will follow royal tradition and hold Lilibet’s christening at Windsor.

Harry is due to release a literary memoir next year detailing his time in the Royal Family.

The book may offer some insight on the choices made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
