Population Matters, a UK-based charity, says they are seen as “a role model for other families”. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are parents to two children – two-year-old Archie and Lilibet, who they welcomed in the beginning of June.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who quit as senior working royals in 2020, welcomed Lilibet Diana in California on June 4.
Their decision to limit their family to two children reduces their environmental impact and will “ensure a better future”, according to the charity.
This is following Prince Harry’s announcement that he does not wish to have more than two children.
The Duke has talked many times about their choice to limit their children to two.
In the infamous Oprah Winfrey interview he said: “But now we’ve got our family. We’ve got the four of us, we’ve got our two dogs. Done.”
Following up, Ms Winfrey asked: “Done—two is it?”
“Two is it,” Meghan said.
In a 2019 interview with British Vogue, Harry said he wanted “two, maximum”

The Duke said that the planet is “borrowed” during a talk with chimpanzee expert Dr Jane Goodall in Vogue magazine.
“Surely, being as intelligent as we all are, or as evolved as we all are supposed to be, we should be able to leave something better behind for the next generation,” he said.
Population Matters, which campaigns to achieve a sustainable population, praised the pair for their decision to keep their family small.
“In choosing and publicly declaring their intention to limit their family to two, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are helping to ensure a better future for their children and providing a role model for other families,” a spokesperson from the charity said.
“Having a smaller family reduces our impact on the Earth, and provides a better chance for all our children, their children and future generations to flourish on a healthy planet.
“We commend the Duke and Duchess for taking this enlightened decision, and for affirming that a smaller family is also a happy family.”
They awarded the Royals and nine others the “special award” to commemorate the UN’s World Population Day on Saturday.
Each winner will receive £500 to donate to their chosen charity.
Wendo Aszed, founder of a women’s empowerment and community health project in rural Kenya, also received the honoured award.
Emma Gannon, author of Olive, a best-selling novel addressing the choice to be childfree, and Nairashe Maritsa, a teenager fighting child marriage in Zimbabwe, were also among the award winners.
