Meghan and Harry attacked for ‘vain glorious celebrity thing’ as Kate and William praised

Kate Middleton and Prince William board Royal Train

Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, concluded their royal tour of the country at Windsor Castle with other members of the Royal Family this evening. Commenting on a poignant picture of the pair waiting for the royal train in Batley, Yorkshire, the ITV host commented how impressed he had become with the two. In a stern criticism of the Sussexes, Piers brand Meghan and Harry’s Californian endeavours “vain”.

He tweeted: “Great photo.

“As the Sussexes do their vain-glorious celebrity b******t thing in California, the Cambridges quietly go up and down the UK on a train, paying tribute to our pandemic heroes.

“My admiration for these two has grown hugely this year.”

Although the royal tour was used as an opportunity to thank NHS workers, it did also attract criticism from Welsh and Scottish ministers due to the timing.

First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, claimed the Scottish Government had made the royal household aware of the restrictions in place north of the border.

Although not directly criticising the pair, Ms Sturgeon did state the government articulated their position on the restrictions ahead of the visit.

Like England, Scotland is in a tiered system where travel is not advised between Scotland and the other devolved nations unless for work purposes.

She said on Monday: “The Scottish government was advised about the intention to visit, and we made sure that the royal household were aware, as you would expect, of the restrictions in place in Scotland so that could inform both the decision and the planning of the visit.

“Any more questions on that should be directed to the royal household.”

Despite this, the First Minister did welcome the support of the royals towards NHS staff in Scotland.

During the pair’s 1,250-mile round trip, they also visited Cardiff.

Ahead of venturing to Wales, Health Minister, Vaughan Gething stated he would rather avoid anyone from making unnecessary visits to the country.

Due to the couple’s tour being classed as a working visit, it would be exempt from tier and travel restrictions.

The tour was also backed by No10 who claimed it had come as a welcome morale boost for the country.

A spokesman for No10 said: “The PM is delighted to see the warm reception the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have received on their hugely valuable train tour of England, Scotland and Wales.

“The tour will be a welcome morale boost to frontline workers who have done so much during the pandemic.”

This evening, the Queen hosted the couple with other members of the Royal Family during a service at Windsor Castle.

Tonight’s appearance was the first time the Queen has been seen en masse with other royals since before the pandemic.

Also at the function were Prince Edward, Sophie the Duchess of Wessex, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
