Meghan and Harry made headlines around the world when they told Oprah Winfrey they were “trapped” in the monarchy before choosing to leave royal life last year. The couple also made a series of serious allegations against the Palace and how it handles mental health and race. Many royal watchers criticised the pair because their tell-all aired when Prince Philip was in hospital, although Meghan’s friend Gayle King later said the interview would have been delayed had the Duke’s health declined.

However, another royal fan speculated on Twitter as to why the couple chose to do a tell-all interview last month, exactly a year after they carried out their final royal engagements.

@UKRoyalTea tweeted: “We are in the early stages of a massive royal PR push that’s been planned for years.

“Many major spring events have been cancelled or downsized, but there was always going to be big press around the Cambridges’ tenth anniversary, Prince Philip’s 100th birthday, HMTQ’s [Her Majesty The Queen] 95th.”

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William will be celebrating their wedding anniversary this week.

The Queen’s birthday actually took place last week, while the Royal Family were still in their official mourning period for Philip.

However, her official birthday will be celebrated in June with Trooping the Colour, although the pandemic means the occasion will be much more low-key than initially expected.

The account continued: “Add in the Diana statue unveiling and the world opening back up allowing the royals to go out for public engagements and it’s going to be a huge effort around highlighting each of those events, spreading it among the British and international media.”

The Royal Family will be unveiling a memorial statue of the late Princess of Wales on what would have been her 60th birthday this July.

However, much of the furore surrounding the occasion has focused more on whether Harry may make the trip back to the UK for it, or if his fractured relations with his family mean he is more hesitant to return.

The fan continued: “Royal followers see the family returning to business as usual and celebrating events we have long looked forward to, but others will see it more cynically, because the Sussexes knew what lay ahead and have tried to make the narrative of the next few busy months all about them.”

The fan account also pointed out how sources close to the Sussexes leaked details of the pair contacting Zara and Mike Tindall to congratulate them for welcoming their third child — a detail no other royals released to the public.

Meghan and Harry also faced a wave of criticism after the Duchess of Sussex was photographed with Archie out and about in LA for the first time since leaving the UK just hours before Prince Louis’ third birthday.

Some royal watchers were frustrated when the Sussexes continued to occupy headlines in the run-up to Philip’s funeral earlier this month.

Meghan was absent after her doctor advised the heavily pregnant Duchess not to travel, while Harry spent five days in quarantine in Frogmore Cottage before attending the service.

However, the Duchess of Sussex’s friends claimed she did not want to attend the funeral because she did not want to be “the centre of attention”.

Details of her handwritten note on the wreath the Sussexes left at St George’s Chapel were also leaked, while other sources alleged Meghan “adored” Philip.

Harry, too, caused a stir after it was speculated that he would be the only royal walking in the procession behind his grandfather’s coffin not in military uniform.

The Queen then put her foot down and ruled out any military dress for the occasion — a move some claimed was an attempt to avoid “embarrassing” the Duke of Sussex.

The couple also announced their first Netflix production about Harry’s international sports event — the Invictus Games — as athletes train for the 2022 competition.

However, a release date has not yet been announced for ‘Heart of Invictus’, so it seems unlikely that it will coincide with the royal events coming up in the next few months.
