Meddling John Bercow REJECTS bid to ensure no deal Brexit – ‘NOT GOING TO HAPPEN’

Speaker John Bercow has ruled out the idea of proroguing Parliament to force through a no deal Brexit. The response came after some Conservative Party leadership candidates suggested they would bypass Parliament to deliver Brexit with a no deal, if they were elected as Prime Minister. Speaking in the Commons, Mr Bercow said: “As we all know, because I have said it several times and I think the honourable gentleman believes this, is that Parliament will not be evacuated from the centre stage of the decision making process on this important matter.

That is simply not going to happen

“That is simply not going to happen. It’s is just so blindingly obvious that it almost doesn’t need to be stated, but apparently, it does and therefore I have done.”

Former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab on Wednesday did not rule out the option of proroguing the sitting of the current Parliament to block MPs attempting to stop Britain from leaving the European Union without a deal at the end of October.

He told a hustings of Conservative MPs ruling out any option would be “weakening our hand with the EU”.

He added: “If I become Prime Minister we are leaving at the end of October.”

Mr Raab also said he was the only contender with a “credible negotiating plan” for Brexit and “the candidate you can trust who will give us the best shot of getting a better deal”.

The House of Commons is due to break for summer recess in July, but the former Brexit Secretary suggested he would be willing to block MPs returning to Westminster in order to deliver on the 2016 EU referendum result.

Candidates Boris Johnson and Esther McVey, who both resigned over opposition to the proposed arrangements Mrs May negotiated with Brussels, have also pledged to take Britain out of the bloc “with or without a deal.”

Ms McVey suggested she too may seek to bypass Parliament if elected Prime Minister and not take any withdrawal deal back to the Commons to prevent MPs from amending the proposal.

Speaking on Wednesday, the former Work and Pension Secretary said: “All the shenanigans on the floor of the House – Parliament trying to take over control from the Government and people trying to tell the Prime Minister what to do – that was because she was bringing the withdrawal agreement back that could be amended.

“What I’m saying is I won’t be bringing a withdrawal agreement back to the floor which can be amended therefore nobody can do it.”

A majority of MPs are against the UK leaving the European Union without a Brexit deal.

So far 11 Conservative MPs have put their names forward to take over from Mrs May, with the Prime Minister resigning as Conservative Party leader on Friday.
