Massive hummus recall of 80 different brands over salmonella fears

More than 80 types of hummus have been pulled from supermarket shelves because they could be contaminated with salmonella.

Shoppers are being urged not to eat the recalled products made by Zorba Delicacies Limited, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of the chickpea-based dip.

Symptoms caused by salmonella can include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps and the bacteria can be particularly harmful to children and elderly people.

Zorba supplies several supermarkets across the country including Aldi, Asda, Sainsbury’s Lidl, Morrisons, Iceland, Safeway and Spar.

A Nando’s-branded peri-peri hummus is one of the products removed from the aisles to contain outbreaks of the illness.

The Food Standards Agency said shoppers should return any of the 82 hummus products on the warning list for a full refund.

Point of sale notices explaining to customers why products are being recalled and telling them what to do have been displayed in shops selling the items.

It was initially feared 17 products could be infected after an FSA alert on October 29 but the list has since grown.

The first alert applied to items with a use-by-date of up to November 7 but this has extended to November 17.

In a statement Zorba said: ‘The first issue was identified in a limited volume of hummus during our testing procedure, and root cause analysis quickly pointed to the likely source as being an ingredient supplied by a third party.

‘Further extensive testing of batches of the suspected ingredient resulted in a presumptive indication of the presence of salmonella in a sample.’

The South Wales based company said it is awaiting further test results to confirm this but are recalling additional hummus items as a precaution.

They added: ‘In both instances, we immediately alerted the FSA, with whom we continue to work on this matter, and instructed customers to remove products from all outlets.’
