Former Brexit Party MEP Ben Habib detailed multiple issues with SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon’s independence dream. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Mr Habib argued Ms Sturgeon’s plan to leave the UK and rejoin the EU wasn’t on the cards for Scotland. He added, in the unlikely event of this happening, Scotland may have to build a border between itself and the rest of the UK.

Mr Habib said: “Over 60 percent of Scotland’s trade is with the rest of the United Kingdom.

“A very small amount of its trade is with the European Union.

“The other thing Nicola Sturgeon is asking the Scottish people to do is to put up barriers with the UK, their biggest trading partner.

“They would have to put a genuine physical border between Scotland and the rest of the UK.”

Mr Habib pointed out other problems if Scotland were to cut ties with the rest of the UK and rejoin the EU.

He said: “Nicola Sturgeon would be giving up those close ties that Scotland has with us.

“They would also take on a huge burden of becoming a contributing, subservient member state of the European Union in their flawed currency union.

“I think it is a big ask and I think Nicola Sturgeon is whistling in the wind.”

Beyond these difficulties, Mr Habib also claimed there would be economic hurdles Ms Sturgeon would have to overcome before Scotland could become a member of the EU.

He said: “Nicola Sturgeon would have to get the Scottish economy in a state where the EU would even accept them in the eurozone.

“She would have to find some mechanism to leave Sterling and get into the euro.

“She will have to meet all their requirements and it simply isn’t on the cards.”

Mr Habib finished by saying: “Nicola Sturgeon is just not being honest with the Scottish people.

“I loathe the idea of ever accusing a politician of being a liar but she is not being honest when she talks about independence and joining the EU.

“There is no prospect for Scotland other than total subservience.”

The Scottish First Minister’s plans for Scottish independence were put on hold earlier this year due to the coronavirus crisis.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said there will not be another Scottish independence referendum, after the Scottish people voted to stay as part of the UK in 2014 – in what was dubbed a “once in a generation vote”.

But, recent polls have suggested Scots could be warming to the idea of independence – creating a potential issue for Mr Johnson.
