Masked boy, 15, who stabbed maths teacher in a school corridor is detained
A masked teenager who stabbed a maths teacher in a school corridor has been sentenced to 14 months in youth detention.
The boy, 15, wounded Jamie Sansom at Tewkesbury Academy in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, on July 10 this year.
The school was locked down for four hours after the attack, with two nearby schools also asked to close as a ‘precaution’.
The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, put on a snood and a hooded top to cover his face and armed himself with a six-inch kitchen knife from home.
He earlier told a friend to ‘wait until period one’ before attacking Mr Sansom at 9.10am.
In a chilling warning, he dialled 999 minutes before the incident to tell them a teacher at the school would be stabbed, Bristol Magistrates’ Court heard.
The boy earlier pleaded guilty to attempting to unlawfully and maliciously wound Mr Sansom and possessing a bladed article.
Imposing a 14-month detention and training order, District Judge Lynne Matthews said the defendant was ‘not acting impulsively’.
‘You took the face covering to school, you took the knife to school.
‘You told a friend what was going to happen and you told the emergency services.
‘Nothing strikes me about it that was impulsive.’
The defendant will serve half his sentence in custody and half at home working with a youth offending team.
Mr Sansom, who began teaching maths at the school in 2017, was hailed a ‘hero’ by parents after the attack.
He was discharged from hospital on the same day he was attacked and at the time said he was ‘recovering well’.
Mr Sansom said: ‘I have received more than 100 messages of support, which has been a big boost.
‘It was hugely uplifting to know I had that support behind me, and I want to thank all of my colleagues and the parents at Tewkesbury Academy who have taken the time to reach out. It has meant a lot.’
