Princess Margaret was Her Majesty’s younger sister and their father King George VI famously described them as “Lilibet [Elizabeth] is my pride; Margaret is my joy”. Royal author Andrew Morton explores the contrast between the two sisters’ in his new book ‘Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters’.
Mr Morton told PEOPLE magazine that Margaret, who died in 2002, “was someone who understood the Queen in a way no one else could”.
Despite their seemingly different temperaments, the sisters were thought to be extremely loyal to each other.
Mr Morton explained how they had an “unique” relationship as siblings.
He told the magazine: “They knew each other intimately from the day they were born.
“There is a unique intimacy between two siblings brought up together, brought up royal together, that is absolutely fascinating.”
The royal expert went on to describe how despite the generation gap “the parallels between William and Harry and Elizabeth and Margaret are there to be seen”.
He added: “In both cases you have one sibling who pushes boundaries. While the other is more cautious.”
Mr Morton highlights how both siblings have been labelled “the heir and the spare” due to their roles within the monarchy.
Prince William is second in line to the throne after his father Charles.
Although Margaret and the Queen’s relationship draws parallels to William and Harry’s, Mr Morton pointed out a significant difference.
He said: “Harry is being far more proactive in using his name and popularity to advance causes in a way Margaret never did.
“She much preferred to be carousing until 4 in the morning.”

Harry and William’s relationship has come under pressure in recent years with the Duke of Sussex claiming he is on a “different path” to his brother.
During the Sussexes’ tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this month, Harry claimed William is “trapped within the system”.
He added: “The relationship is space at the moment. And, you know, time heals all things, hopefully.”
Harry is rumoured to be returning to the UK in the summer to unveil a statue of his late mother alongside William.
The statue of the Princess of Wales commissioned by the brothers is expected to be installed to mark what would have been her 60th birthday.
Speaking in a video for the Telegraph, royal expert Camilla Tominey explained that the Dukes will have to put on a “united front” as all eyes will be watching the events unravel.
She said: “I’ve been told it’s unthinkable that either brother would pull out of that engagement.
“Both of them have worked and collaborated on the statue and its design.
“I think regardless of what’s going on behind palace gates they’re going to have to put on a united front because the world’s press will be watching.”
