Map shows five areas of England with biggest increase in Covid cases

Covid cases are rising in almost all of England as the prime minister is expected to delay the final stage of easing restrictions.

The latest figures show that 90% of 315 local authorities saw an increase in cases in the week to June 9.

Just 24 areas (8%) saw a drop in cases, while six remained the same.

Cases have been steadily increasing over the weeks, while all five areas showing the fastest growing rates of Covid infections are in Lancashire.

Boris Johnson is expected to announce that plans to lift all remaining restrictions will be pushed back from June 21 until July 19 at a 6pm Downing Street press briefing later today.

Scientists have been urging the Government to delay plans to allow more adults to receive the jab, as the Delta variant continues to spread at speed across the country.

Mr Johnson said the mutation first detected in India was of ‘serious, serious concern’, while experts warn that it risks causing another Covid wave if allowed to spread unchecked.
