Manchester fire: Panic as ‘loud bang’ sparks blaze – thick black smoke fills sky

Footage showed thick black clouds of smoke over Altrincham on Wednesday morning. ‘Loud bangs’ have been reported on social media. 

Reports hold a blaze is being tackled at an industrial unit in the area. 

In a statement posted on Twitter, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service said: “Three of our appliances are currently attending a fire involving an electrical substation on George Richards Way, Altrincham.

“Electricity North West engineers will be carrying out work that may cause a loss of power to some properties.

“Please avoid the immediate area.”

Several roads are closed in the area, including Craven Road and Barlow Road, and bus diversions are in place.

Greater Manchester Police have said on Twitter: “George Richards Way, #Altrincham is closed due to a fire service-led incident at an industrial unit. 

“Please stay clear of the area as it is anticipated to be closed for some time.”

Transport for Greater Manchester also urged travellers to “seek an alternative route”.

Express.co.uk has approached Greater Manchester Police for comment

Social media reports described the scene, with “a big black cloud of smoke” rising above an an industrial estate in Broadheath.

Altrincham Today added there were reports of a “loud bang” from the estate.
