Manchester Airport station evacuated over bomb scare

A man has been detained by officers after a bomb squad were called to deal with a suspicious package at Manchester Airport.

The airport’s train station had to be evacuated and all trains, trams and buses to and from the airport suspended.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: ‘A cordon is in place at Manchester Airport transport interchange and people are encouraged to follow directions from officers.’

Police said a controlled explosion of the suspect package has taken place and enquiries continue.

A spokesman for the airport confirmed an area surrounding the station had been evacuated, as had staff members working in offices nearby.

One worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘There are police everywhere, lots of armed police and ambulances.

‘There are lots of police and unmarked vehicles as well.

‘The train station is also an office building, nobody is being allowed into work.

‘People are confused they thought it was to do with Thomas Cook initially.’

Flights have not been delayed by the ongoing incident, an airport spokesperson said.

Coach driver Caroline Watson told the Manchester Evening News she saw a man running around naked at the airport’s coach station.

She said: ‘Some of the air cabin crew that park there have been turned away. It is like a mass exodus. All hell has broken loose.

‘The guy was running around with his arms waving in the air, going up and down.

‘He was running back and forth. He was going in and out of the terminus.

‘He had no clothing on whatsever. It is not what you expect to see at 6.10am on a Monday morning.’
