Man who kidnapped wife's lover ordered to attend 'thinking skills' course
A jealous husband who kidnapped his wife’s lover was spared prison – and sent on a ‘thinking skills’ course so he can ‘stay out of trouble’.
Craig Dewar, 34, was ordered to pay £500 compensation to John Hawkins after finding out he was having a fling with his wife Zoe.
A court heard Zoe Dewar, 32, worked with Mr Hawkins at a council social services office – and admitted having an affair with him to her husband.
In a ‘moment of madness’, jealous Dewar waited for Mr Hawkins to finish work before forcing his way into his van and attacking him.
Prosecutor Andrew Kendall said: ‘Dewar handed Mr Hawkins the keys and told him: “Follow the car in front or I’ll cut your throat open.”
‘A pair of pliers were pushed hard into his neck.’
Dewar admitted ‘confronting’ his love rival but denied kidnapping Mr Hawkins or using any violence against him.
He told the jury that Mr Hawkins had taunted him about his wife and said: ‘It’s a real man she wants, not you.’
Mrs Dewar was accused of threatening Mr Hawkins after the alleged kidnapping.
She allegedly went to his house and told him: ‘You’ve got to drop the charges or it will be 100 times worse for you. I will ruin your career.’
She told Cardiff Crown Court she visited Mr Hawkins’ home but said: ‘I wanted to go there to check on his well-being and to see if he was OK.
‘I said, “I am really sorry about all this. We have both done wrong and it’s time we moved on”.’
Mrs Dewar was cleared of perverting the course of justice.
Her husband cried in the dock as he was found guilty of kidnap and actual bodily harm.
The defendant was jailed for 22 months, suspended for 22 months.
He was also ordered to complete a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement, 19 sessions of a thinking skills programme and 300 hours of unpaid work in the community.
The thinking skills programme is a group course to ‘develop your thinking skills to help you stay out of trouble.’
Sentencing at Newport Crown Court, Judge Nicola Jones added: ‘You have a loving relationship with your wife and you have moved on from feelings of revenge.
‘This was a moment of madness stemming from feelings you couldn’t control following the affair between John Hawkins and your wife.’
She told Dewar he had been on the ‘cusp of custody’ but she said she could suspended his sentence because he was capable of being rehabilitated.
He was also made subject of a five-year restraining order not to contact Mr Hawkins – and ordered pay the victim £500 compensation along with £1,200 prosecution costs.
