Man who hit golf green keeper with horseshoe found guilty of murder

Virgo, 42, admitted manslaughter and carrying an offensive weapon, but denied murder.

The jury returned a guilty verdict on the murder charge on March 29 after deliberating for three hours and 49 minutes.

The incident began when Mr Parker’s brother, Craig Parker, 27, told one of Virgo’s friends to turn the music down on a train at around 11 pm on July 30, 2022.

The groups shouted at each other before the argument was ended by off-duty police officers.

The court heard how Virgo followed the brothers when they got off at Reading station and hit Thomas Parker in the head with a horseshoe.

Craig Parker explained how just before the second incident he had been vomiting after suffering a reaction to a McDonald’s milkshake he’d consumed on the train.

He said: “Once I vomited I felt Tom looking over me, making sure I was alright. Then it happened, so quickly, Tom was on the floor in front of me.”

Following the incident, the court heard how Craig Parker pursued Virgo through the train station as he attempted to leave the scene. However, Craig managed to catch up with and get a hold of Virgo.

Craig said: “I was in a bear hug, grappling, just holding (him), I did not want to let him go.”

After Virgo was detained, Craig was told he needed to go back to his brother. He said: “I heard someone say ‘you best come now’.”

Despite the emergency services trying all they could to save him, Thomas Parker died at 12.40 am.

The court hear how Mr Parker died as a result of a subarachnoid haemorrhage after he was hit, a blow that means fragile blood vessels near his brain burst and sent him into cardiac arrest.

Robert Chapman, the consultant forensic pathologist who performed the post-mortem on Thomas told the court: “One to 2 percent of cases I deal with have this sort of injury.

“I would expect to see this type of injury about once a year or slightly less than that.”

Virgo is due to be sentenced on March 31.
