An “emotionally shattered” man has unveiled his dramatic transformation after undergoing a hair transplant in Turkey.

Carlo Brancati, from Middlesborough, started losing his hair when he was just 25 years old, leaving his confidence in tatters. He was feeling paranoid and unable to speak to women as his hair continued to thin over the years.

After friends and family began making comments and jokes about the businessman’s lack of locks, his patience was wearing thin – he even found himself obsessively comparing his own hair to others and judging them in comparison. Then finally, a conversation with his older brother led him to drastic measures and he decided it was time to go under the knife.

Speaking to TeesideLive, the now 36-year-old’s explained how his lack of hair was having a huge impact on his mental health – so much so, that he would even avoid mirrors so he didn’t have to see himself. He felt that people were constantly looking at him – and his hairline – so it became an obsession.

Carlo, who owns a business selling memorial jewellery, explained: “You get really paranoid. When you’re having conversations with people, mainly guys, you’ll notice that they’re looking at your hairline – and why wouldn’t they because you’re losing hair.”

Then, after for a quick chat over FaceTime with his brother, he finally decided enough was enough. His Sydney-based brother, who also suffers from hair loss, was shocked when he saw Carlo’s drastic change in looks and he couldn’t contain his laughter – this marked the final straw. He said: “This is what done it for me. He seen me on FaceTime and he genuinely just started laughing, like he couldn’t catch his breath.

“He said it was like looking into the mirror. I thought you know what, sod this, I have had enough. The week after I decided to take the plunge and went to Turkey.”

At the time, Carlo was just 33 years old and was determined to do something about the way his hair looked. A conversation with his barber about his thinning hair led him to consider a hair transplant, a type of surgery that moves hair follicles you already have to fill an area with thin or no hair.

Previously, the businessman hadn’t thought this was an option and said he believed it was only accessible to “footballers or really rich people” but his barber said this wasn’t the case and suggested Turkey. He began to thoroughly research places in Turkey that offered the surgery and was determined to go through with it.

Finally, in June 2019, he travelled to the country where he paid €3,000 to have 3,000 hair grafts implanted into the front of his head. The decision seemed like a drastic one, however, Carlo says it has changed his life.

Speaking about his experience, he added: “It’s made me 10 times better. I just think when you start losing your hair you think I would do anything to get it back. The fact that I’ve got that now I feel like I’m in a better position in life.

“It’s done wonders for my confidence. I can’t tell you how confident I am, I’ll approach girls if I’m out in a club now – it’s just made a massive difference.”

He looks like a completely different person following the surgery and now he is hoping to change the lives of others who have suffered from hair loss. He feels that there is a big stigma surrounding the surgery, and going to Turkey has the reputation of being ‘cheap and nasty’ – but does not feel that’s the case at all.

Now he is even offering to help others who are uncertain of the procedure and is trying to break the stigma using social media. Launching his own TikTok as The Hair Transplant Specialist, Carlo is hoping to educate people on the process and guide anyone thinking about undergoing the procedure to the right clinic for them.

Using his masters degree in health psychology, he is hoping to transform the lives of those struggling with hair loss and boost their confidence, knowing all too well what a positive impact the surgery had on his life. He is even hoping to launch his own clinic and range of shampoos and conditioner to boost the confidence of men and pursue his passion for improving mental health when it comes to confidence.

On his dreams for the future, he said: “I think people are a bit misinformed and think it’s unnatural like a wig, but it’s not – it’s just natural hair. My ultimate dream is for the people who want to do something about their hair but are reluctant to do so to feel that they can.”
