Man shot during 'planned police operation' in south west London
Met Police flying squad were carrying out a planned operation with firearms officers in south Wimbledon when a man was shot at about 8.10am.
He was taken to hospital. His condition is unknown.
A second man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to rob.
The Met’s directorate of professional standards has been informed.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an independent investigation.
Residents told Get West London they heard a loud bang this morning and saw a man running while holding a pistol past a nearby pub, the Garden Shed.
One resident added: “It wasn’t a comfortable sight seeing a man casually dressed with half his face covered with a bandana/snood carrying a huge firearm.
“He then headed back towards North Road and was searching in the gardens of the flats on the corner of North Road for something.”
Another resident told the site they saw multiple undercover officers and armed police.
They added: “Someone was put into an ambulance with a large bandage wrapped around their arm. Heard police radioing for ambulance, saying that someone had been shot.”
A number of roads around Haydons Road have been closed and a forensic scene is in place.
