Man shot dead by police during ‘intelligence-led operation’ in Birmingham

A man in his 50s has been shot dead by police in Birmingham.

It happened during an intelligence-led operation in Wheeleys Lane, in the Lee Bank area of the city just before 5am, West Midlands Police said.

Despite CPR being given, the man died at the scene. “It sadly became apparent nothing could be done to save him,” West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A trauma doctor was sent, along with two paramedics.

Police officers’ bodycam footage is being examined.

West Midlands Police said in a statement: “A warrant was executed as part of an intelligence-led operation in Wheeleys Lane in Lee Bank just before 5am today.

“A man, in his 50s, was shot and died a short time later at the scene.

“The area is currently cordoned off.

“Officers’ body worn video has been downloaded.

“The matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
