A scooter rider has died after a crash with an ambulance which was responding to an emergency call.

The incident occurred yesterday night on the A628 Barnsley Road at a junction near the Lord Nelson pub in Hoylandswaine, Barnsley.

The rider, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital but died later from his injuries.

South Yorkshire Police has said the ambulance driver is assisting with enquiries.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to contact them using the 101 service.

A force spokesman said: ‘At about 10.25pm we received a call from a member of the public and another report from Yorkshire ambulance service about a reported collision between an ambulance that was responding to an emergency call, and a scooter.’
