Man jailed for threats to murder gardaí and rape their children

A man who threatened to kill gardaí and rape their children in a series of abusive calls has been jailed for almost four years.

Mark Fair (28), of Ballynahone, Fahan, Co Donegal, was in Australia when he phoned gardaí at Buncrana garda station in 2015. Over the course of 17 days, Fair rang the station numerous times and ranted at five female gardai with a succession of threats and abusive language.

He also asked for Garda Gary McLoughlin, the 24-year-old officer who was killed in the line of duty in December 2009.

Passing sentence yesterday, Judge John Aylmer described the threats to kill a garda and her husband as being at the upper end of the scale. He also said the threats to the five female gardaí was “cowardly”.

“The calls were very particular and very violent and of a vile sexual character,” added Judge Aylmer.

Letterkenny Circuit Court heard gardaí could tell it was Fair making the calls as they had dealt with him before.

He previously pleaded guilty to a total of 11 counts of making threats to kill, threats to damage property and also making grossly offensive phone calls.

Fair first began his series of abusive phone calls on January 10, 2015, when he called the station and recognised the voice of the female garda who answered.

He told her he was going to shoot her in the back of the head and also kill her husband.

He also asked how Gary McLoughlin was and said he was going to go to the station and pull the plaque that was dedicated to him off the wall.

Fair called the station at a later date and spoke to a different female garda and said he was going to rape her and her children, and that he hoped her mother died of cancer.

On January 12, he again called the station and told another female garda he would rape her son and sister “just for sport”.

Fair also pleaded guilty to 11 counts of making gain or causing deception using DoneDeal by placing fraudulent ads on the website.
