Man in hospital after 'setting himself on fire' outside London Tube station
A man ‘set himself on fire’ outside a north London Tube station in front of horrified commuters on Friday afternoon, reports say.
Emergency services scrambled to Camden Town underground stop at around 4pm before rushing him to hospital on board an air ambulance.
The Metropolitan Police said the man’s injuries are not life threatening and that he had been detained under the Mental Health Act.
One witness told the Camden New Journal that the victim had set himself on fire.
Another, a Tube worker, told the paper: ‘You’re just prepared that here you are you can see anything really now.
‘Even so, it was pretty bad. He was screaming.’
In a statement, The Met said: ‘Police were called at approximately 4.01pm to Camden Town Underground Station.
‘Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene and found a man who was on fire.
‘The fire was extinguished and he is believed to have suffered non-life-threatening burns.
‘He has been taken to hospital by air ambulance.
‘The man was detained under the Mental Health Act at the scene.’
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman told the Camden New Journal: ‘We were called at 4.01pm today (30 July) to reports of a person injured at Camden Town Underground Station.
‘We sent an ambulance crew, a medic in a car, an incident response officer, an advanced paramedic, a clinical team leader, and a hazardous area response team. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
‘We treated a man at the scene, who has been taken to hospital by air ambulance.’
Two fire engine also attended the incident, which caused minor delays to local transport services.
